The Craft of Loving-Kindness

I remember during the summer months when I saw a sick-looking bee or wasp on the pavement. I would place my hand next to it, let it crawl on, and then hold it gently while I continued my walk.

Sometimes, the warmth from my hand was all it needed to come alive again, and it would walk to the tips of my fingers and fly away. A few times, they would fly excitedly around me, and it felt like they were saying thank you.

Sometimes, they were not well at all, so I took them home and gave them some sugary water. I put some drops of it in the palm of my hand, and their long tongues would lap it up. Then they would become animated and start buzzing excitedly, which was a sign they were ready to leave me. So I would take them outside and watch them fly away, feeling happy that I had helped in some way.
