Keeping Good Company

Bhaja Govindam, is a poem composed by Adi Sankaracharya. The poem has 33 verses. Verse 9 of the poem says “from Satsangh(Good company) comes non-attachment, from non-attachment comes freedom from delusion, which leads to Mindfulness. From Mindfulness comes Jeevan Mukti”. Jeevan Mukti is the ultimate goal of a human as per Hinduism. There are four goals of human called Purusharthas — Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha. Moksha at the basic level means “liberation from the cycle of death & birth”. This liberation can happen while alive or after death — Jeevan Mukti is moksha while alive & videhamulti is moksha after death. Sankaracharya here states that one can become a Vedeha Mukta (liberated while living) in this life and it starts with having Good Company — Satsangatve.
