I learned about a rare disease called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva, or FOP. FOP is a disease that slowly replaces muscles, tendons, and ligaments with bone and eventually locks the body in place — almost as if being mummified while still alive. The disease has roughly a one in a million incidence rate, making it a rare diagnoses. I can’t imagine viewing this statistic through the eyes of a patient. How unfathomable must it be to receive this diagnosis and learn that you are among the most unlucky people on the face of the earth? Odds are, all of us can think of things in our own lives that probably shouldn’t have happened. Why do impossible things seem to happen ALL the time?
