I am ashamed and guilty that for a lot of my life, I was a Zionist Jew. I was a liberal Zionist, but my justification came from compartmentalizing inconvenient information and forming arguments around propaganda. My understanding of the Nakba was whitewashed. I mostly read western literature about the history. And I didn’t comprehend the larger geopolitical nature of the American and Israeli alliance. I paid attention to the information that made me feel comfortable and ignored what contradicted my beliefs.
