A Storm Inside the Cape

The day dropped out of the sky
he slipped on the stony steps
the spiral staircase that curls
the side of the lighthouse
banged a knee hard enough to draw blood

Late to the light, the great lantern
that guides the tossing ships
a first order Fresnel lens taller than a man
tower of gleaming crenulated glass,
setting it ablaze he grabs the salt-rusted railing
the tempest hits, animal spirits clawing
