Café Le Refuge doesn’t exist anymore. Its new name and colour scheme cloud the magic of the City of Lights I felt when photographing its soul. Or more precisely, the year I traversed the city giddily stealing intimate glimpses of its atmosphere through a camera viewfinder, hoping to understand how Eugine Atget, Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertèsz, Robert Doisneau, Edouard Boubat, Willy Ronis, and Peter Turnley saw Paris. While it took a few good months to edit all the photos down to a manageable number, it took me years to process the emotional meaning of this profoundly aesthetic experience.
