Companies House charges an automatic civil penalty for late accounts, while HM Revenue and Customs charges separate penalties for a late Corporation Tax return and interest on tax paid late. You can therefore be penalised twice, by two different bodies, for what feels like one delay, and each penalty grows the longer the delay continues.
