Property prices in Melbourne have become so expensive that many young people will never be able to buy homes in their own neighbourhood communities. The negative social impacts of housing pressures play out across class, generational, and gender lines, affecting individuals and communities simultaneously. Despite the chronic housing affordability problem in Melbourne, few Australian policymakers seem to possess a thorough understanding of housing ‘unaffordability’ as a social problem. A deeper and more nuanced understanding of the causes and effects of Melbourne’s housing affordability crisis is clearly required.
