I stood motionless at my hotel room window, gazing out at the Australian landscape. A thick plume of smoke rose from nearby trees and shrouded the landscape in a hazy veil.
At first, I thought the smoke came from a barbecue. Tourists have always enjoyed putting shrimp on the barbie during Australia’s hot weather. But, as time passed, the smoke thickened, and flames burst into the sky from the treetops.
That would’ve been a “once in a lifetime event” just a few years ago. However, as a result of climate change, deadly wildfires have become a normal part of life in Australia.
