Youtube offered me up the suggestion of David Epstein’s TEDx talk this morning, and how apt it was. I am a career changer, and I, like many others like me that I’ve met, have this notion in our heads that we’re somehow behind because we came into our careers later. When I graduated from my fashion knitwear design degree, I was 22, and I had spent the last 8 years gearing myself for the creative industry.
I didn’t even like knitting! Sounds ridiculous, I know, but I loved the creativity and problem-solving that came with it. I was particularly good at draping and pattern cutting because I could see and visualise how all the puzzle pieces could fit together even before cutting out the shapes. I’d look at the mannequin and know exactly what I needed to do with my fabric.
