While their husbands and sons were fighting and dying in foreign fields, the working class women of Glasgow also went to war.
They didn’t seek or start this fight. They were forced to defend themselves when their profiteering landlords demanded they pay more rent or face eviction.
The home-made weapons they wielded were not bombs and bullets, but balls of wet washing and bags of flour. The landlords had a private army of bailiffs, political connections, and the power of the courts on their side.
