Choosing to Love Our Bodies in Spite of a Fatphobic Medical System

“Are you happy with your weight?”

There I was, squeezing in my annual check-up at the last minute in late December, flipping through the usual paperwork. It was the first time I’d ever seen such a question on a doctor’s check-in sheet.

I was grateful to see it. It looked to me like a consent question: Do you want to talk about your weight — or would you rather not?

And more importantly, it seemed to be giving control of our body back to the person who should have it: its owner.
