A lot has been written and well documented about Brendan Murphy — his journey from a professional basketball player in Germany, to a trader on Wall Street; from a starving artist in Brooklyn, to acclaimed artistic success around the world — however there is one thread that weaves its way through all of that. Call it hard work; call it hustle; call it perseverance; or call it what I do, grit — an unwillingness to fail at what he sets his mind to.
How does he do it? The origin lies in his famous Boonji Spaceman sculpture. First, the meaning of “Boonji” — positive energy derived from creativity. Second, the posture of the spaceman itself — the right leg bent at the knee, foot slightly elevated, poised to step into the unknown. Yet Boonji does not fear the unknown; instead, they embrace it. Boonji knows not what will happen when their right foot retouches the ground, but Boonji knows they are creating a new experience.
