My Life-Long Dance With Alcohol Began as an Innocent, Wide-Eyed Child

My sister Michele, our friend Debbie and I were playing hide and seek with the neighborhood boys. We were around 11 to 13.

The three of us girls were hiding in the bushes in Debbie's front yard. It was a warm New Jersey summer evening with dusk beginning to descend.

Out of nowhere, we heard an eerie singsong voice "DeeDee, DeeDee, DeeDee." I was a little freaked out, Michele laughed, and Debbie turned scarlet. Her eyes showed fear, recognizing that the voice belonged to her mother. Debbie’s nickname was Dee Dee.
