When my mother died of ALS (following her mother and grandfather and preceding her sister in passing from the disease) I learned of the genetic cause of this in our family. Along with the name of a gene that seemed quite odd and unfinished (a jumble of letters and numbers) I discovered its pleiotropic effect with a shared risk of a disease I had not heard of Frontal Temporal Dementia or FTD. In brief examination of this I discovered horror???—???individuals who were no longer the same person they were most of their lives and in later stages often catatonic and a burden to their families. When I informed my broader family on the genetic finding in what’s known in genetic counselling as a “family letter” I could not bear to mention the connection to FTD- surely if they investigated more they would find it.
