Throughout the years in the United States, the opioid crisis has increased in both mortality rates and addiction. Forty years ago, the Drug Enforcement Administration began its task to oversee the access to opioids. In “The Federal Agency That Fuels the Opioid Crisis” written by Leo Beletsky and Jeremiah Goulka, a faculty director of Northeastern University’s Health in Justice Action Lab and senior fellow, convey the Drug Enforcement Administration’s incompetence and approaches have led to an increasement of deaths and misuse of opioid addiction across the United States. Beletsky states that after hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars and attempted regulations, the Drug Enforcement Administration has failed to balance the access and control of prescription drugs.
