How Filipinos Learn English (and Why Formal Education Is Overrated)

I have been single since 2010, so getting married is not in my present mind.

But whenever I think of my future babies, I imagine myself pinching their cheeks and saying, “You’re so cute oh my gosh I’m so happy your daddy gave me you.” No pauses because their cuteness will take my breath away.

I am a Filipino, so English is not my native language. But I know that I will speak English to my babies, even if I get married to a Filipino or anyone from a non-English country.

It is normal in the Philippines. Filipino parents speak to their babies in English — more specifically Taglish. Taglish is the everyday language in the contemporary Philippine society.
