If we were to put on our theoretical lenses for a moment, there are numerous concepts that can be used to characterise the self and society, such as social acceleration or reflexivity (Rosa, 2010, p. 33) (Giddens, 1991, p. 16). However, Niklas Luhmann added some significant points to the list, such as functional differentiation and second-order observation (Luhmann, 1995, p. 101) (Luhmann, 1993, p. 768). In the depiction of profile identity formation, systems theorists Hans-Georg Moeller and Paul D’Ambrosio are concerned with the perspective of second-order observation as a key concept in their theory of profile identity (Moeller & D’Ambrosio, 2021, pp. 37–38).
