InJanuary 2017, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) announced the recipients of that year’s Excellence in Teaching Awards. The special honors, established by the UNC Board of Governors “to encourage, identify, recognize, reward and support good teaching at each of its 17 constituent institutions,” were extended to six members of the faculty. One of those singled out was Zachary “Zak” Stevenson, a scenic technology instructor at the UNCSA School of Design and Production (D&P or DNP). Stevenson’s faculty profile on the awards announcement page included a quote by an anonymous former student, who praised Stevenson’s approach to teaching the technological complexities of staging live theatre. “Since the moment I stepped into our program,” quoth the nameless protégé, “[Stevenson] has been an influential force in my life.”
