From Playtime to Paychecks

Ihad my annual lunch with an old friend last week in London. We meet up every year to catch up and talk about old times. It’s been a tradition for years now, and yet every year the meal gets shorter. The courses fewer and the drinking more restrained.

We met at university in Nottingham in 1992. I was studying Biology. He was studying Humanities. He was the first person I talked to on my first day. Standing in a queue to get our student cards, so we could start drinking in the union bar as soon as possible.

When we graduated three years later, he went to London to pursue a career as a music journalist. I stayed in Nottingham to pursue my dream of becoming a musician.
